Organize Your Files

The Cluttered Beginning

If you are anything like I was, then you probably can look around your desk and find a tremendous amount of paper strewn about. You either have stacks of paper in neat little piles or you have stacks of papers on top of books which themselves are stuffed with papers. Throw in some opened and unopened mail and a few dozen sticky notes and you will be in the same place where I used to be before I got the courage to finally bring order to my life by organizing my files.

Now if you think my desk was bad, then wait it gets better. I also had large cardboard boxes full of old papers with which I couldn’t depart, and even a plastic container with every paper from every class that I had in school. I had shoe boxes full of receipts and ticket stubs and old sticky notes with phone numbers and addresses all crammed together.

Now I had attempted before to get organized, and I had a small filing cabinet to show for it. There were folders for “newspaper clippings”, “projects”, “bank statements”, and “to-do lists” which consisted of old to-do list of stuff I had already done or stuff I never did. I even had a folder labeled “Miscellaneous” which was crammed full of stuff. I thought this poorly organized filing cabinet and total lack of system for dealing with new files was going to finally save me from the mountain of paper that was taking over my life, and I was wrong.

Mail, receipts, and all sorts of papers were flowing in faster than I could I deal with them. I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t stay organized. I just didn’t have enough time to spend sorting and filing, and in the end it made me feel like I was lazy and I gave up completely on keeping my files organized. What I didn’t realize then, was that I wasn’t lazy, I just didn’t know how to organize my files and keep them organized, and so I was spending much more time than I needed on sorting and filing which ultimately led to complete failure.

Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. I found the secrets to getting organized and staying organized. The initial work can seem daunting, especially if you had the amount of paper that I had, but after you complete setting up your filing system, you will only spend a few minutes a week maintaining it and you will finally be free.
