Organize Your Files

Where do Files come From?

While it might seem really obvious where all of those files you accumulated came from, it is important to take a look at their origins, so that you can have a better understanding of what you are dealing with.

One of the biggest sources of files that enter your house will come from your mailbox. Every bank statement, credit card statement, and bill that will enter your house will first be in your mailbox. This is why it is very important that you don’t just check the mail. Every time you open that mailbox, you must think of it as an opportunity to maintain your high level of organization by taking the mail from start, the mailbox, to finish, a file folder or the trash. The tools necessary to accomplish this feat everyday will be discussed a little later.

Another source of files are self generated. In other words, files that you create either through printing off the computer or written notes. There are many different ways that you can generate your own files, but the point is that you created them, and you are going to need to be conscious of why you are creating these files. After you are done with these self created file you will need to decide whether to keep them or not.

There are many other sources of files, but they essentially fall into either being brought into the house or created inside the house by you. Knowing which file you are dealing with means that you can take the appropriate approach to dealing with the files so they get filed away or trashed when you are done with them.
